Five local building societies – the Melton, Loughborough, Earl Shilton, Market Harborough and Hinckley & Rugby – have joined forces to donate £10,000 to Leicestershire Cares to help people in need directly affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Leicestershire Cares is a leading charity which supports local businesses, schools, young people, ex-offenders and community groups.
“We are delighted to be able to provide support through Leicestershire Cares to those who have been adversely impacted by COVID-19,” says Martin Reason, Chief Executive, at Melton Building Society. “Social responsibility and care for our community is at the heart of all building societies and it’s great to be able to pull together in Leicestershire to make a real difference to the communities in which we operate.”
Building societies are considered an essential service and nearly all of the five’s branches have remained open to serve savings and mortgage customers during the pandemic, albeit with reduced hours to protect the health of staff and customers.
“All Leicestershire’s societies have worked through World Wars and global crises and are well placed to help and support our customers through Covid-19” says Mark Robinson, Chief Executive at Market Harborough Building Society.
“This generous donation from our local building societies is a great example of how we can work together to support those in need during the current crisis,” says Kieran Breen, Chief Executive at Leicestershire Cares. “We are committed to working in partnership with business, the community and government to tackle and beat this crisis.”
